To serve is to learn

Some might ask what I am doing here so I will take a moment to share. I am planning to use this blog site to see where my research takes me as I discover how technology can be used in service learning and then how to assess what this technology use. I assure you, this will be an exciting journey and I invite all to share any tidbits of information that you might have on this subject. Now, without further ado, lets get on with the postings.

Would you consider helping to run a middle-school basketball league a service learning activity? My husband started Eastern Maine Basketball League 7 years ago when our son was in Middle School. It's many hours every season, but affects lots of kids.

At my last school, in Pittsfield, MA, I started a program with the city Parks Dept. As my students were learning about plants, trees, and gardening in the classroom, they were also going out to a city park to work alongside a master gardener to beautify the park. The connection between the classroom and civic responsibility was tangible and very meaningful.

hi Heather,
I just found an interesting reference to Service Learning in the Maine Arts Education online newsletter. I thought of you, so I'll pass it on: http://timeforbelfast.org/?page_id=681.
